3 Tips for Busy Moms to Have A Prayer Life

Prayer... My grandmother used to say it's as easy as you talking to God and God talking you. Although as moms, it may sometimes feel as though you just can't find the time to pray and talk to God. As moms there are a million different things that you have to do each day and like a million tasks pulling you and your attention away from God. Among the noise and activities of your life and family it can be difficult to quiet life down long enough to pray.

Truth is this... prayer can no longer be optional in the life of a believer, and especially not in the life of a mother. Our children are going to need the prayers of their mother. But HOW do we do this? You may be asking yourself, I'm going to give you 3 significant tips here today that will help you regain your focus on prayer. There have been many times I've heard a mother say she wishes she had a greater prayer life but she just can't figure out how to make it happen. How many times have you felt the prompting of the holy spirit to just sit down and talk to God?

How many times have you yearned to be in the presence of God in prayer, but the kids kept pulling on you with a need? It happens! We are moms. The key is being intentional and stern with yourself and your children about spending time with God in prayer. We have to make a conscious decision to make God and prayer a priority in our life, much like we do everything else. You're not too busy, you're not too tired, you CAN make time to pray everyday! And i'm going to tell you how...

1. Pray While You Work: So, by this I mean simply talk to God in prayer while you're washing those dishes mom. Pray while you are folding the laundry, God is still listening even in those moments. I can't tell you how many times I found myself overcome by the presence of the Lord while simply washing dishes in my kitchen and praying. When you focus your heart on God, he will meet you right where you are precious mom!

2. Set Aside Time: Now, this one may sound nearly impossible, but I promise you it's not! Maybe your set aside time is early in the morning before everyone wakes up, maybe it will be after everyone goes to sleep at night. Or perhaps in the middle of the day during nap time or quiet time. Or, it can even be smack dab in the middle of the day when you tell the children "it's time for mommy to spend time with God". This is something I have learned to do as my children have grown a bit older. I've explained to my children that mommy needs to spend some time with God each day, so when I say that to them now they understand that it's mommies alone quiet time and it works wonders for me! Set it up so that the kids know what they are to do during this time. Set up an organized activity that they can accomplish on their own while you pray. Some ideas are- A craft box! or "activity box" These are awesome!! In some type of container you insert age appropriate items your child enjoys. Things that will keep their little hands and minds busy. It can be a puzzle, construction paper and crayons, paper and stickers, play dough, or whatever they like. These are just a few suggestions that have worked well for me. Movie time is not a bad idea either, if you don't mind the TV time. A good movie will give you a good solid hour or more to pray and perhaps finish up some house work afterward.

3. Pray With Your Children:  If you can't seemingly find the time to pray alone, another good idea is to incorporate your children with the prayer! They need to learn how to pray anyway right? What better way than praying WITH you! You can add this prayer time into your regular daily activities. If  you're consistent with this prayer time, it will become normal for your kids each day. They will even become excited and expectant of prayer time with mommy. It's a great way to introduce prayer to your kids and a great way  for them to develop their own prayer life for years to come!

There you have it, three simple ways to make prayer a priority in the life of a busy mom! Having communication with God doesn't have to be hard or impossible, you CAN do it everyday! And it doesn't always have to be long and drawn out. Spending time in prayer each day is beneficial, even if it's just 15 mins... do it! You'll be glad you did!
