Organize Don't Agonize-Homeschool Ready

Organize DON'T Agonize

If you're anything like me, staying organized is VITAL in your everyday life of mommying
(yes, made that up, lol).  As many of you homeschool moms start off the school year, let me offer you some tips for keeping you and your little ones focused. Organization is key! Having a plan to stick to and keeping things organized will help you tremendously!! In our home we are preparing for our second year of homeschooling (woo hoooo!!). So, we are rather new to this ourselves, but I learned a lot after my first year that I believe will help some other moms who may just be starting out or someone who may just need some help getting organized his yeart. So, let's take a look...

    1. Write out a plan for the entire year- Now, if the very thought of this overwhelms you, have no fear (lol). You CAN do this! I started out by writing what exactly should be learned by the end of the year, according to age and grade level. Write out subjects you will teach each day and decide now in what order you will teach each subject. Math first, spelling, reading...doesn't matter. You decide what works best for your little one(s).  If this needs to be changed, it's o.k. Some families actually choose to teach ONE subject each day of the week. However you choose to structure your day is up to you. What's important is that you START with a plan.
    2. Decide on curriculum- Once you have a basic outline of what you plan to have your little one learn this year, now it's time to focus on what curriculum you will use to accomplish your goals for education. There are many out there to choose from, so try not to let this process overwhelm you. This is why setting some yearly goals help you. Makes it easier when choosing curriculum when you have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish throughout the year with learning. Rather you choose a fully outlined curriculum that is purchased or piece together your own, it's o.k. 3. Set Up Your Child's Work Space- Whether you have a separate homeschool room or you're planning to work from your kitchen table, have a designated place to work. A place with adequate lighting and space for your child to thrive!! Make sure your little one has a comfortable learning space. Don't force them into a tiny, dark uncomfortable space. Chances are they will not enjoy learning much if the environment is not set up correctly. Smaller children especially like to see color and light. Works wonders
on their mood and encourages a happier school day. Don't despise the environment in which you'll work. My children don't always like sitting at their desk. That's o.k! Sometimes we move our work to the floor or a comfy chair within our learning space. Whatever works!
    4. Clearly state to your child or children what's expected- Believe it or not, children appreciate structure. Once you start a routine for your school day, stick to it as much as possible. You're homeschooling so, time is flexible. It's one of the perks of homeschooling! But don't let it be so flexible that your child doesn't complete whats necessary throughout each day. It's easy for you and your child to get lazy with homeschooling. We don't want that. Ultimately, we still want a quality education for our children. Structure and organization doesn't mean learning can't be fun. It most certainly can! Embrace the opportunity that you've been given to participate in the growth of your child's love for learning.
    5. Enjoy your Homeschool Year - That's all that's left to do!
